Summer Events

The following events will be held in the summer of 2009.  More information will be posted as needed.

As you are aware, our August event and Annual meeting were 'washed out'. We decided to incorporate the Annual meeting into our regular September meeting. So, this month's meeting will take place at Eric Orff's porch overlooking the Suncook River on Wednesday, September 16th at 7:00 in Epsom. If  you would like directions, please email or call 269-4264. Also, next Saturday's hike to Straightback will not go on as scheduled. We may look at trying to organize something in October. In the meantime, if you have an idea of a hike or short trip within the watershed that you think other folks might be interested in, please let us know. We're always looking for ideas.

FIRST FRIENDS OF SUNCOOK RIVER CAN DRIVE A SUCCESS!

Pictured here is the Bilodeau family with Friends of the Suncook River member, Pam Miller. FOSR hosted a Can Drive Clean Up during the week of May 4th. Enough cans were collected between the Barnstead collection location and the Epsom Can Trailer location to nearly fill the Can Trailer! The FOSR Recycle for a Better Environment Can Trailer is permanently located at Webster Park on Rt. 28 in Epsom.

Sarah Bilodeau of Barnstead won a Friends of the Suncook River t-shirt and a ½ gallon of locally made maple syrup for her efforts. If you would like to learn more about Friends of the Suncook River or would like information about upcoming kayak and hiking events, please visit the website www.friendsofsuncookriver.org or email info@friendsofsuncookriver.org.

Hike to Mt. Mack and Mt. Clem

On October 12, 2008, a beautiful Saturday, nine of us met at Camp Bell, in Gilmanton, NH and began our climb up to Round Pond and then to Mt. Mack where we had lunch and took in the beautiful views of the ponds below.  We then pressed on to Mt. Klem where more spectacular views of Lake Winnipesauke, Rattlesnake Island and the mountains of the Ossipee Range.  As you can see by the pictures the fall foliage was simple spectacular.  Accompanying our leader Mary Fougere were Paul Oman, Charlie and Nancy Mitchell, Frank Weeks, Mary and Sylvia Wallace, and Bill and Linda Provencal.

September 2008 Kayak Trip on the Suncook

A Flotilla of Friends enjoyed a morning of kayaking on the Suncook River. About fifteen colorful kayaks graced the stretch of river from Center Barnstead to the Barnstead Parade Dam on Saturday, September 20th. Paddlers ranged in ages from six to sixty and a good time was had by all.  Perhaps one of the more delightful moments of the trip came when a curious osprey followed the kayaks for quite a while, circling and  watching, We were also visited by blue herons and watched many a fish jump on the surface.

Member Pam Miller, who also sits on the Milfoil committee in Barnstead, found a single almost dead strand of the invasive plant; milfoil. This stretch of river has been a subject of study and treatment for the past several years. (See our newsletter.) That piece of milfoil is now housed in Mary Fougere's middle school classroom and is "thriving", thus alluding to the resilience of this nasty invasive. It is being used as a teaching tool to help educate out next generation of watershed stewards
